A Religious Man

from Inclement Weather by Eric McCoy

/

lyrics

His heart stutters like a car
That don't wanna start
In the winter when it's cold
And he don't like the light to shine
Too bright in his eyes
But the florescent in this hospital
Can really bring him down
And I try to cheer him up
Old stories about baseball
The players in the fifties were his favorite
Then the nurse will ask me to leave
So he can get some rest

And so he looks to God
But I just can't believe with him now

My grandpa was never a religious man when I was growing up
And the family followed suit
Sundays were for sports and friends
There's no time for church when the big game's on
But now with the tubes all connected
And the hours moving slow
He's found the time for faith
A faith I've never had
And never knew I wanted

And so he looks to God
But I just can't believe with him now

I'd like to share in his faith
To hold his hand and pray with him
But I just sit in silence
No thoughts in my mind
As his lips say words I've never heard him say before
My head bowed down and my eyes closed
But no thoughts in my mind

And so he looks to God
But I just can't believe with him now
