Tubbs was a janitor at the grade school
Kids saw his missing teeth and thought him a fool

Everyday he'd mop the cafeteria

Tubbs would bring a finger to his chest
That was stamped with a blue star - football's best

"I have no change, this job pays no good, no more"
"But Tubbs we need it for the school store"

They'd pile on him like a pyre
Till he'd break and run, face burning like a fire...

Every night after the kids went home
Down haunted hallways, Tubbs would rome

Past walls with paper scenes of a farm
Past the water fountain that's always warm

To the door that was always open
Open, for folks like him, who never knew when

Kids started carrying hearts like dimes
So small, so short like unfinished rhymes

Twisting the knob, thinking of his kin
Smelling Clorox, he'd step in-

But one September night
Tubbs sat beneath the closet's lonely light

Trying to picture his son in college
Jotting down his earnings, Tubbs could judge

Unless there was a miracle from the lord
His boy's hands would stay busy, his mind bored

Tubbs couldn't smell the poison in the room
A gas leak - full in bloom

In the morning, Tubbs's corpse clutched a quarter
White men with black bags carried the stretcher...
